Ana's story

Hi my name Ana Diaz and I grew up in small town called Antigua two hours outside of Guatemala City, Guatemala. I grew up with three brothers and sisters in a poor family on the outskirts of town. My mother was a single mother and life was hard growing up as we were very poor. My mother hand washed clothing for her neighbors and she had a roadside stand where she cooked and sold tamales and chuchito's. When I was seven tragedy struck our family when my four year old younger brother Esvan Misael drowned in the neighborhood water cistern. When I was a teenager I got my first job selling shoes at a neighborhood store. When I was 20 I left Guatemala to visit my uncle in the United States and I decided to stay and build a new life. Life was challenging learning a new culture but I persevered. I had my first child Angela when I was 20. My third child Norvel was born autistic and I spend a lot of time attending to his needs. In my early 20's I went to school to become a certified CNA which I practiced for 15+ years.
