Total loan: $5,000

Montclair, NJ, United States / Services

Joan's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped get the required certification in order to expand my cleaning business to include carpet cleaning, repair, dyeing, and crime scene clean-up services.

Joan's story

I am originally from Makueni, Kenya. I moved to the US in the year 2000 to pursue a higher education. Most of my schooling in Kenya was in boarding school, and it taught me how to be independent at young age. I also grew up assisting my parents with chores around the house, and this gave me a lot of appreciation for working with my hands. In May 2013, I graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in jurisprudence, and a paralegal certificate. I attended college in the evening, and worked as a full time administrative assistant during the day. At the beginning of 2013 I was laid off from Zurich North America; where I had worked as an administrative assistant for 4 years. I have always dreamed of running my own business, and in October of 2013, I finally decided to do so after several months of unsuccessful job searching. I am married with two children, and it has always been my dream to provide for my family, and give them the financial security to help them accomplish their dreams. I also run a nonprofit whose mission is to support the village of Kikoko in Kenya by eradicating poverty, growing their economy, and support education of the young residents of Kikoko. Having a successful business will put me in a better place to support my nonprofit goals.
