Greta's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped expand my pet acupuncture business with the purchase of a small trailer to serve as a mobile treatment room.

Greta's story

I grew up in a small town in the coal-mining region of southwest Virginia, in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. My father was a physician, as was one of his grandfathers. One of my mother’s grandfathers was a veterinarian. My first career was as a landscape architect, which brought me to Maryland for work. I loved working with nature as a teacher and a canvas, but eventually decided I wanted to follow something closer to my ancestors’ healing path. Traditional five-element acupuncture gives shape to my gift for the restorative, healing touch that comes from an intimate connection to nature. I received my training and license in Maryland in the mid-1990s, before acupuncture became mainstream. I’ve always been something of a pioneer. I was the first staff acupuncturist at the University of Maryland Health Center, and I was among the nation’s first acupuncturists to be certified in animal acupuncture as part of a unique veterinary-sanctioned program in Maryland. There is something about the spirit of dogs, cats, and other non-human creatures that calls me to awareness of my deepest, most hopeful, most creative self. I know this is also true for others. My dream is to be able to support myself with a practice devoted solely to the care of companion animals. The mobile unit and supportive marketing materials I hope to purchase with a Kiva Zip loan would go toward the fulfillment of that dream.
