A loan helped purchase the equipment, permits, and support required for our expansion into more markets and drop-off sites.
I’ve spent my entire life in close proximity to the water. Whether it was collecting periwinkles on the shores of Cape Cod as a little girl, stalking blue crabs in the marshland with my dad, learning the skilled art of clamming with your bare feet, or tide pooling to discover new and unusual creatures; the ocean has always been a constant in my life. My family instilled in me a deep love and passion for the natural world, and I have carried that over into my profession, pursuing marine science academically and embarking on a new and exciting entrepreneurial venture. I wound up in California pursuing a Ph.D. at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. I studied fishery management, and partnered with commercial fishing vessels in the Santa Barbara harbor by trading free labor for data research. However, I soon discovered that I cared more about the fishermen and direct marketing of local seafood than the raw data I collected. I realized that the long chain of custody and the huge disconnect between the people catching the fish and the people who loved eating seafood could be easily mended. With the growing public consciousness driving the local food movement from organic foods to farmer’s markets, direct access to local and sustainable seafood was the next logical step. I started Community Seafood with the goals of supporting local fishermen, while bringing the freshest and most incredible seafood directly to local California neighborhoods. Coming into our second year of operation and close to 300 members, we are now looking forward to bringing our delicious seafood to new communities!
