As a mother of two toddlers and a former Kindergarten teacher, I envision a world where young, impressionable children are taught generosity and compassion at an early age. This type of education would help children develop the skills necessary to identify causes they are passionate about, work to support those causes and, in turn, help make the world a better place for future generations. Young children are innately compassionate and altruistic; I witnessed this everyday in my classroom as boys and girls freely gave away hugs, pictures, and crafts and offered to help in every way imaginable. As children age, however, they often develop a sense of entitlement that seems to stem from a lack of exposure to the many local, national and global issues that they could be contributing to. While schools work very hard to develop a sense of community and build character, parents have a responsibility to model compassion and generosity...but lack sufficient resources to do so. Therefore, in August of 2012, I decided to resign from teaching so that I could create Giving Families - a resource that helps parents share moments of giving with their children. I truly believe that compassion and generosity are, perhaps, the best gifts we could ever give our children…and the world.
