Brisas San Juan Group's story

San Juan La Laguna is a peaceful, clean and artistic town on the shores of Lake Atitlan. The town is distinctive because of the number of self-taught artists who paint colorful landscapes that reflect the natural beauty, history, customs and legends of the town. Several of the artists have participated in national and international exhibitions and have received awards for their work. San Juan is also known as a center of natural dyes. Vegetables, plants, leaves, seeds, bark are among the items used for the dyes. The resulting organic textiles are quite beautiful and in various tie dye patterns.

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Brisas San Juan” or “Breezes of San Juan” is one of many women’s groups in San Juan. (There are also a number of cooperatives that have been created by women.) The Trust Bank was formed by 8 Maya Tz’utujil women who meet monthly to transact business on their loans and participate in educational trainings on a number of relevant subjects.

Maria, along with the ladies in the Trust Bank, is beginning her 3rd loan cycle with KIVA investors. Along with her husband, Maria has a textile business and makes traditional woven wrap-around skirts called “cortes” as well as other items including pants, shirts, aprons, jackets and backpacks. Maria is requesting a new loan to buy various sizes and styles of zippers, various colors of thread, fabric as well as buttons. She also wants to buy sewing machine oil. The couple is dedicated to working hard to support the educational needs of their 8 children as well as all the household needs.

KIVA investors are much appreciated for providing capital for the loans. Thank you, KIVA investors!
