Water For Starving Land Group's story

Mikayil (in black) and Qasham have known each other for more than 20 years. They both are internally displaced persons (IDPs) and live in the same village, Bilasuvar IDP Settlement. Mikayil used to be a client with an excellent credit history and continues the same pattern. In 2007 he was appointed a branch manager of Bilasuavar 3 of AqroInvest credit union. He is married and has four children.

He is a farmer by nature and since childhood has helped his father. Today he is very dedicated to his land. He has about 2 hectares of land and raises seasonal fruits and vegetables. He usually sells his crop in the bazaar and to neighbors.

Fruits and vegetables are very popular among the Azerbaijani people, and they use it fresh in salads and punch, and in their favorite delicious dishes like dolma, pilav, etc.

The village where they live is located in the southern part of Azerbaijan and has a very dry climate. Water channels do not exist. Irrigation fields are very difficult and, due to water shortages, producing more crop every year is impossible. Mikayil complains that it is very hard and expensive to spend so much money for water. Instead of geting the same harvest twice a year, he can have only one due to the water shortage. He wants to increase his harvest and, as a result, increase his profit. Mikayil and Qasham are very excited to avail this opportunity.

Mikayil`s group would like to apply for a loan of 25,000 AZN with the help of the Kiva Community Impact Loan program. This loan will change their lives positively because they will have direct access to water. Instead of spending money to bring water, they will be able to grow more fruits and vegetables and meet their clients` demand.
