A loan helped to increase the number of chickens she can rear.
Noms Group's story
In one of Harare’s oldest suburb of Mbare, we find one woman named Otilia. She is in the business of raising and selling broiler chickens. Otilia has been in this business since 2014 when she discovered that she could help her husband in taking care of their family. Her husband is self-employed buying and selling second hand cell phones. They have two children and one of them is going to school and the other one is yet to attend pre-school. Otilia started off building a metal fowl run with her husband’s assistance. She raised batches of 50 broilers initially since she did not have enough capital to raise a bigger batch. Within a short time she received an order from a local canteen which needed all her broilers each time they were ready. Last year in November she and her other members of the Noms group received their first loan from Thrive microfinance. The loan helped them a long way in their businesses and they managed to repay well. For Otilia she managed to raise bigger batches of 100 birds. She is planning to even further her batch size as she plans to start raising batches of 150 birds. She has bought some building material because she wants to build another fowl run to ensure large space for her broilers. Otilia, Mafungei, Spirida and Nancy are the members of the Noms Group (Noms is an acronym of the four women’s names). The group members grew up together and they know each other very well through supporting each other in business.
