Tikal Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy more chickens and pigs to sell.

Tikal Group's story

Chichicastenango is a place located in the western highlands of Guatemala. A favorite tourist spot, Chichicastenango is home to one of the most beautiful markets in Central America. Merchants come together every Thursday and Sunday to sell artisan crafts, traditional huipiles (blouses), and cortes (skirts), among other traditional wares, as well as food items.

Located in Chichicastenango is the trust bank group “Tikal." The name of the group derives from the ancient Mayan pyramids in the east of the country. This group comprises eight women who are starting their fourth loan cycle with Kiva.

One member of the group is Juana. Juana is 67 years old, married, and has four children Juana studied through the third grade before discontinuing her studies. None of her children were able to complete a formal education because Juana did not have enough money to pay for the expenses associated with sending four children to school. Juana´s primary business is the raising of animals. She raises chickens, pigs, and cows. She also has a second business weaving huipiles, which she then sells in the market. With her loan, Juana plans on investing in more chickens and pigs, and she will also buy more thread for her weaving.

Juana says that since she started taking out loans with Friendship Bridge, she has been able to increase her earnings to the point where she now has acquired a small savings.

Thanks to Kiva investors, Juana can prepare for a future and anticipate future financial costs. Without your support it would be difficult for Juana to have a savings in case of emergencies or other necessities.
