A loan helped to buy fruit.

Maria Esther's story

Portoviejo is the capital of the Manabi province in Ecuador, known for being the oldest city in the coastal area. This area has a beach, a city and countryside. Every two weeks the communal bank "5 de Septiembre" meets here in the La Paz district at the home of one of the members.

This is where Maria, 34, lives. She has a common-law husband and three children, ages 14, 12 and 10 who attend school. Her husband is a fruit merchant and they live in a rented house.

Maria has a stall where she sets up her cart in the city market. She sells fruit such as apples, grapes, plums, strawberries, pears, etc. and works every day from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. She leaves early in the morning to go to the wholesale market to buy the best products for her customers. She works with her husband and they have had the business for several years. Despite the fact that the work is hard, she must do it for her family's well-being.

This loan is to buy fruits such as apples, pears, bananas, plums, etc. For eight years she has been in the communal bank which she enjoys because she is very close to the members. Her dream is to have her own house and shop.
