Corazon Del Pueblo Group's story

In the town of Totonicapan is the trust bank called “Heart of the Village” or “Corazon del Pueblo”. Totonicapan is known by travelers for a national park that is home to several different sandstone formations collectively called Riscos de Momostenango.

This trust bank is comprised of seven women. They all speak in the native dialect of Ki’che. Their businesses range from the selling food and fabrics, to the weaving of textiles.

Silvia, a member of the group is 59 years old and has four children. All of her children have graduated from high school and her youngest is attending university. Silvia’s business is the weaving and selling of traditional baskets and bags. With her loan, she plans to invest in more materials to increase her inventory of baskets. This includes the purchase of the plastic wiring used in the weaves as well as dyes and molds necessary to make the baskets.

Apart from the loans Silvia enjoys the monthly training she receives thanks to the Microcredit Plus program run by Friendship Bridge. She mentions having learned how to make the proper investments for her business as well as how to manage her earnings.

Because of the trust and the investments made by Kiva lenders Silvia will be able to grow her business and raise her standard of living.
