Catherine's story

Catherine is 23 years old lady who believes that through passion, knowledge and skills, she can succeed in life and help her society. Catherine is a first born of five children and lives in Mathare North, Nairobi with her dad (a carpenter) and her mother (a hawker). Her parents’ earnings are approximately $30 a month which is not enough to support the family. Catherine works at Digital Divide Data (DDD) as a Data Management operator. DDD enables talented youth from low-income backgrounds to access professional opportunities and acquire higher education. DDD also offers a work-study program to its employees and she happens to be a beneficiary. Catherine joined Kenyatta University in January 2016 to pursue a degree course in Special Needs Education. The partial scholarship from DDD is not enough to fully support her learning and thus requesting for a loan to pay for her University fees and hopes to complete her degree by 2018 and make her dreams come into reality. Catherine’s goal is to start up a special school that will accommodate children with special learning needs but can’t afford special schools due to their expensive nature. She plans to work in a special school after her degree and later build her own special school and provide her services at an affordable fee to the society and even offer scholarships to children from poor families who have the thirst to learn but don’t have the funds to attend special schools.
