A loan helped to buy a modern dairy unit.

Irene's story

Irene is a 46-year-old beautiful farmer. She is an extraordinary woman with a great personality. At a time when many farmers in Kenya are abandoning dairy farming and agriculture owing to poor yield and low income, Irene, hailing from Kerugoya, is scripting a success story with her dairy farming. She is a role model, a mentor, and an inspiration to many young farmers in her village because of her resilience despite personal challenges and her passion to support her children as the primary caregiver.

For the past five years, she has been involved in mixed farming, and her primary source of income has been growing maize, cabbage, and tomatoes and keeping dairy cows.

Irene is requesting a loan to build a modern dairy unit. The dairy unit will provide a good place where cows can relax and where they will not be affected by harsh weather conditions. Through the loan, her cows will produce more milk and they will never suffer from diseases that are brought about by harsh weather conditions. Irene believes that if women smallholder farmers had the same access to finance, the number of people who sleep with hungry stomachs could be reduced in Kenya.
