Martha, age 31, is a responsible single mother. She lives with her daughter, Jesenia, in a small home that she inherited from her mother eight years ago. She thanks God for the mother that she had. With her immense love, her mother gave her the tools so that she would be able to get ahead. Martha inherited her house and five hectares of productive land from her mother. That is where Martha grows potatoes and peas. Her land is in an area that is very far, and she has to walk for many hours to get there and take care of her crops. During the harvest times she hires day workers to work the land with her. She says this is a very profitable business activity. She herself transports her food to the wholesale market in the city of Huancayo, which is where she sells her food. “There are times when I have to buy other harvests in order to be able to stock my customers,” she says.
