Maria is a 30-year-old single woman who has a sixth grade education and lives with her parents. She opened her weaving business six years ago and employs two people to help weave six traditional skirts/”cortes” each week. Maria arranges the threads in intricate patterns and has another employee who helps her with this part of the process.

Three years ago, she began to sell used clothing. She shares that she appreciates the kindness and help from Kiva investors. And thanks to her income, she is able to help cover household expenses. Maria is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more used clothing and a variety of threads. Her goals are to open a new business and to have her own funds so she doesn’t have to ask for a loan!

Maria has joined six other Maya K’iche women to participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. Their Trust Bank is called “Las Triunfadoras” and is located in the department/state of Quiche. The ladies raise animals, sell new and used clothing, weave traditional skirts, make earthenware pots and sell snacks/meals. They meet monthly, make loan payments and then participate in an educational training (business, health, family, women) that is relevant to their lives. Recent topics have concerned investing and managing increasing profits. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services, consults and exams.

Kiva investors, partnering with Friendship Bridge, are highly appreciated! Thank you!
