$225 of $300 raised.

Started raising funds on Jun 13, 2013

Dina is 27 years old and single. She has been making a living selling clothing for men, ladies and children of all ages for 8 years. She started the business of her own initiative, and she has also established a pupusa [stuffed Salvadoran tortilla] stand at her house. Before, she used to spend her time on household chores at home.

The loan she is requesting from Fundación Campo is to buy corn, pork rind, local cheese, fuel, and other ingredients for making pupusas. She will use another portion of the loan to buy clothes that she will sell in the town where she lives.

She has not been able to invest in her business, because the little she has, she has used to cover household expenses. Until now, she has sold clothing as a street vendor; her dream is to have her own store from which to sell.

German is 36, married, and has four children. His brother taught him blacksmithing, which has been his trade for 10 years. He has to pay a trucker to deliver the materials to his house because they are very heavy. He has applied to Fundación Campo for a loan to buy wholesale iron to make machetes, cleavers, and other field tools. He has applied for a loan because he is only able to pay for his family's basic needs with his own funds and cannot invest to buy more iron. When he sells his merchandise, his income will increase and he can reinvest in his business and send his children to school.

Samuel s 53 years old. He is in a relationship and has a son. He has worked in agriculture since he was very young. His father taught him. He also learned bricklaying thanks to his father and with some friends he learned carpentry. He tells us that his father told him "you should learn a little bit about everything, because if one thing isn't available, the other is". He gets up very early for work because he has to walk an hour to get to the land where he has his crops. He works 7 hours to make the most of the trip. In the afternoon he works in the carpentry shop he has set up in his home.

He is requesting a loan from Fundación Campo to purchase 8 sacks of fertilizer, a bag and a half of seeds, a gallon of herbicides, three liters of pesticides and to pay for laborers to plant corn. The land is already ready to plant, but he needs the remaining supplies and due to a lack of financial resources, he has not been able to buy them. He hopes to earn enough income to purchase necessities for his home. His dream is to purchase land to grow fruit trees, and that his son graduates from university.

Willian is 25 years old, married and has a son. He has been a farmer since he was ten years old and learned this from his father. He also works with some animals and oxen. He gets up at 4:00 am and milks a cow and yoke up the oxen. He has a cup of coffee and then goes to the fields where he has his crops. It takes him an hour to get there. There he works for eight hours and returns home to feed his oxen. He says that he is very grateful to his father because he taught him how to work. He walks about 10 minutes from his house to where he takes the bus to make his one and a half hour trip.

He is asking for this loan through Fundación Campo, so he can buy eight sacks of fertilizer, a bag of seeds, two gallons of herbicide, two liters of pesticides, and pay for labor to plant corn. He already has farmland but not the money to buy supplies and the winter has already started and he needs money with which to plant so that he will have an abundant harvest. This is the only thing he does to feed his family. He hopes to have income to save up and build a house of his own because he is living with his parents.

   		   		   		$375 of $1,000 raised.

Started raising funds on May 26, 2013

Thelma, 47, is a widow and has three children. She has worked in retail with her sisters since she was very young. When she was a child she lost her parents, so her sisters raised her. She got married and had three children: two girls, ages 15 and 20, and a boy, 10.

She makes a living in retail and her husband worked with his own trucks. One day, though, he was assaulted and hit in the head, and he died from his injuries, leaving his wife and children. Since then she has worked every day with her sisters selling clothing from town to town. They taught her the art of retail and this is how she has gotten her children ahead in their studies.

To buy the clothing she goes to two places to make her purchases and pays for transportation, approximately 29 kilometers. She buys a variety of clothing such as shirts and pants for children, clothing for adults, and underwear.

The loan she's requesting from Fundación Campo is to stock more clothing for the Mother's Day season. She has clothing stored but she wants to invest this month and have more so she's able to satisfy her customers.

The loan will satisfy her need to grow in her business selling clothing. This way she'll be able to have economic stability and her children can be successful in the university as well as be able to live better.

She thinks the loan she'll request will improve her economic stability, because she makes a living selling clothing as well as funeral flowers. She also says that with more money her children will have a better opportunity to be able to continue studying.

She plans to continue working with the institution because it's her first loan. She says that in the future she hopes to buy a house in her neighborhood. She'll be able to realize that dream with a loan from Fundación Campo.

Most of the time he walks all the way to the city, though, which takes an hour. To get the goods back home he has to hire a cart.

The loan his is requesting through Fundación Campo is to buy fertilizers and hire workers for the planting season. This will allow him to harvest food for his family and also sell grain. The income will be used to buy clothing, shoes and other necessities for his family.

   		   		   		$800 of $1,500 raised.

Started raising funds on May 27, 2013

Anita, 30, has a spouse and two children. She does domestic chores and tends to her house because she wants to have a clean house and good living conditions so her family can have adequate conditions. She takes in laundry and ironing and does other domestic chores that generate income to cover household expenses; she’s been working doing domestic chores since she was 12-years-old. She learned this occupation from her mother and since then she’s been working for 18 years. She’s now employed in a private home and has been working there for two years doing domestic chore

The loan she’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy 400 concrete blocks, 18 sacks of cement, 1-1/2 quintal of rebar, 3/8 quintal of smooth iron, 12 5-meter beams, 12 3-meter beams, 8 metal sheets and two pounds of nails to build a kitchen because the one she has now is made of mud and reeds and it has many problems in the rainy season.

Her living conditions will improve having a house in optimal conditions because the kitchen is currently in poor condition because the floor floods during the rainy season but she’ll use the loan to build the kitchen so her family will have better living conditions. Her two children who are 3 and 5 years of age depend on her.

Rosa is 21 years old and has a partner and two children. She has been selling fruits and vegetables that she and her parents grow for more than five years. Now she is selling cakes, enchiladas, candies, popsicles, chicken sandwiches, and soft drinks at the snack stand of a school. She wants to increase the variety of products even more, offering products like "pupusas" (thick corn tortillas stuffed with beans, cheese or meat). Her family provides her with some things that she needs for her business, but others she needs to purchase from a village four kilometres away, and transport is hard to come by.

The loan she is asking for from Fundación Campo is to buy supplies to make different food items and improve the infrastructure of her stand, since things get wet when it rains. By buying more merchandise, she will avoid having to travel so often to the village and will thereby save time and money. Her desires are to send her children to school and that they finish university. She also hopes to expand her stand and grow it into a large store with basic products so that her customers don't have to travel so far.

Started raising funds on May 30, 2013

María is 35 years old. She is a single mother of four children who are 17, 16, 14, and 12 years old. For 10 years, she has had a small grocery store in her home and a grain mill to rent out to the public. To purchase the merchandise for her store, she must get up very early because the bus travels a distance of 15 km.

The loan that she is requesting from Kiva partner Fundacion Campo is to purchase cement, sand, and iron to repair the floor of her house, as well as to purchase merchandise for the store. In this manner, she will improve the health conditions that her children live in because the floor is made of dirt, and besides that, it will give her customers a better impression and she will offer a wider variety of products. Also, with the income that she earns, she supports her children who are 17 and 16 years old as they go about their studies.

Virginia, 71, has a spouse and five children but only three of them live with her. For the last 12 years she’s made and sold tortillas, an activity she learned from her mother. To buy the corn which is the main ingredient to make tortillas she must travel to another community that’s three kilometers away.

The loan she’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy corn in larger amounts. With this investment she will buy a larger amount of corn because she’s the only tortilla maker where she lives. Income will be of much use because she still has a daughter in school and she wants to give her everything necessary and to provide stability for her entire family.

   		   		   		$250 of $1,500 raised.

Started raising funds on Jun 8, 2013

María is 34 years old and the mother of two daughters. For over 11 years, she has worked selling foods that she makes such as enchiladas, fried plantains and yucca, nuégados [sweet made from flour, nuts and honey] and chilate [beverage made from roasted corn, chili and cocoa often flavored with anise, pepper, ginger and cinnamon]. María sells these products, as well as coffee and hot chocolate in a local market from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. She learned to cook these foods from her mother.

María has a very good credit history with the communal bank Fundación Campo. She repaid her previous loan financed by Kiva in the category A repayment rating.

With the new loan she is requesting from Fundación Campo, María will purchase the ingredients she needs to prepare the food she sells in the city's central market, located 500 meters from where she lives. She will buy 10 cabbages, 200 pounds of corn, eight baskets of yucca, 200 green bananas, five gallons of oil, and other ingredients as well as to install a new floor and fix some cracks in her house. Purchasing these will help María increase her sales, to improve her profits. This will help improve her finances and allow her to pay her household expenses and her daughters' education.

In the future, María plans to continue the construction of her home because she doesn't currently have the resources to finish doing so.

Kristian is 22 years old, is in a relationship, and has a son. As a small boy he learned to work in agriculture alongside his mother, since this was the only way to make a household income. He works all morning farming, and in the afternoon he sells sorbet to the community, because what he wants most is to provide for all of his son's needs. He plants his crops on the slopes of a hill, which makes the work more difficult.

The loan that he is requesting from Fundación Campo is to buy 6 bags of fertilizer and other acrigultural supplies to cultivate 7,000 square meters of corn and 3,500 square meters of beans. Since it is difficult for him to get out to buy supplies, he will get them all at once with the loan, and he will use them at the right time and in the right amounts. His goal is to build a brick house, since he is living with his mother.

   		   		   		$300 of $700 raised.

Started raising funds on May 23, 2013

Leonel, 22, is single and lives with his parents.

He has made a living selling clothing for two years. He began helping an uncle in this business. Then his uncle left and he was out of a job, so he planned to set up his own business selling clothing. He didn't have enough money, though, so he bought shirts by the half-dozen and when they were sold bought more.

Then he requested a loan from Fundación Campo to set up in the market. Currently he's requesting another loan to have a variety of merchandise to sell to his customers.

He gets up at 5:30 a.m. to go to his store. He buys his merchandise in the capital. He walks 18 minutes to get the bus, which takes two hours to get there.

The loan he's requesting from Fundación Campo is to buy 3 dozen pairs of men's pants, 2 dozen pairs of women's pants, 2 dozen t-shirts and 2 dozen blouses, a dozen pairs of shoes, men's underwear, 3 dozen pairs of socks, a dozen shawls and a dozen scarves, and other items.

With the loan he'll buy wholesale to travel once a month and have enough merchandise to sell to his customers. This increases his possibilities for earning income, for saving and paying back the loan, for expanding his store, and for getting married and having his own family.

Rafael, 52, lives with his partner and three children. From a very young age he was taught by his grandfather to work in agriculture. This is because his father abandoned him and he was raised by his grandfather. His grandfather passed away when Rafael was 19 so he began working independently. At age 22 he got married and began his family. He buys farm supplies in a place four kilometers from his house so he has to hire a vehicle to transport the goods back home. He also hires a cart to take the supplies to his farmland which is a kilometer away from home.

The loan he is requesting through Fundación Campo is to buy fertilizers and seeds to plant 14,000 meters of corn. With this loan he wants to improve his family's quality of live, since he will have a better income and can renovate part of the house.

Started raising funds on May 26, 2013

Blanca is 43 years old, lives with her partner and has three children. She has been selling cosmetics, and clothing of all kinds for approximately 15 years.

She learned this work thanks to a friend who was working in the same business. She goes house to house offering her cosmetics through magazines, and when she has a good quantity of orders, makes up the order to the company. It is similar with the clothing, as she offers women's, men's and children's clothing through catalogs.

The loan for which she is applying to Fundación Campo is to buy a greater quantity of products, as the company gives her a greater profit percentage when sales are greater.

This way she will have sufficient merchandise on hand to offer to her customers and expand her sales percentage. With the income, she hopes to continue helping her three children, who are studying at university, so that they can have a better future as professionals.

Her objective is to position herself as a wholesale distributor of products, and for her children to finish university.

Dagoberto, age 39, is in a relationship and has two children. He started working the land when he was 12 years old. He helped his parents grow basic grains and care for the livestock.

Buying supplies is an odyssey. The city where he buys them is two hours, walking on foot, from his house. Transportation is scarce, and in order to transport the supplies he uses a cart. Therefore, he arrives at his house at night. The trip is pretty long.

The loan that he is requesting from the Fundación Campo is to buy compost and fertilizers and to pay for the labor to plant. This way he will get an abundant harvest that will allow him to feed his family. He will sell the other part of the harvest, and he will get income for the other household expenses.

Víctor, 29, has a spouse and two children. He’s worked in agriculture since childhood; his father taught him. The supplies he needs for his productive activities and for his home he gets in a city that’s 35 kilometers from his house; it takes two-and-a-half hours by bus because transport is quite scarce.

The loan he’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy four sacks of corn seeds, 24 quintals of manure, fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide. With this investment he will buy all the supplies at the same time so he won’t have to make several trips that are so difficult to do because of the transportation situation where he lives. He will be able to apply them in a timely fashion and in the right amounts so that his crop yields will be good.

He hopes his children will complete their schooling, to buy a piece of land and to continue working in agriculture focusing for the most part on vegetables and fruit taking advantage of the zone he lives in which is propitious for these types of crops.

   		   		   		$150 of $1,000 raised.

Started raising funds on May 28, 2013

María, 50, is a widow; she comes from a very humble family so she was never able to attend school because her parents and three brothers had to work, the land to grow basic grains like corn, beans and sorghum. Her mother taught her how to weave reed mats. At that time she was able to do two per week; she also helped her father and brothers with the agriculture on the hillsides because the terrain is quite fractured.

At the age of 24 she got married and her husband helped her much. He installed a small grocery store at home where she sells oil, eggs, beans, sugar and soap among others and her husband worked making herbal remedies. Sadly, he died three-and-a-half years ago and she was left alone with an adopted 13-year-old daughter. At present, she buys pigs to then resell either alive or she butchers them to sell the meat in her community. She does very well because there aren’t many stores or butcher shops.

The loan she’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy two pigs, two quintals of rice, two quintals of beans, two quintals of sugar, detergent, oil, cookies, bread and coffee among other products for the store; also detergents for home cleaning and toothpaste which will be new products for the store.

With this investment she will add new products and increase the amount available because there are only two stores in the community and the population is quite large. Her short-term goal is to stock the store more, to buy some display cases and to provide what’s necessary for her adopted daughter who is in sixth grade in school.

Evilio is applying for a Fundacion Campo loan that he will use to buy the supplies he needs--seeds for jute and maize, fertilizers, pesticides, etc--for his farming business. He will plant 14,000 square meters of jute and 7,000 square meters of maize. Evilio's maize crop is large enough to feed his family and he will sell the jute crop to generate a good cash income. For the future, he wants to build a house of his own so that his children can live more comfortably.

Hugo’s 25-years-old, has a spouse and two children. For the last four years he’s been working in agriculture having learned from his family. He gets the farm supplies he needs in a city that’s two hours away from his house and transports them in a pick-up.

The loan he’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy farm supplies to prepare the soil to plant 112,000 square meters of jute. With this investment he hopes production will be quite good so he can sell the jute and earn income that will help with family expenses. His goal is to continue improving the house they’ve just finished building so that their children can live safely and comfortably.

   		   		   		$25 of $1,000 raised.

Started raising funds on Jun 13, 2013

José is 41 years old, married and has five children. For 30 years he has been a farmer. It is a family tradition; his father was the one who taught him when he was very young, and now he teaches his children to cultivate corn and beans. He gets his farming supplies in a city that is 13 km from his house. To get there, he has to pay a taxi to transport the supplies.

The loan he is requesting from Kiva partner Fundacion Campo is to purchase seeds, compost, herbicide, pesticide, hire helping hands, pay to till the land and get it ready to farm corn, beans, and wheat. This loan is the only means Jose has to farm and get some of the sustenance for his children. At this moment, he is purchasing basic grains, but with the loan, he hopes to grow them himself. His desire is to continue harvesting because he wants to build a big adobe house because the one his family lives in now is made of sheet rock and is very uncomfortable. Beside, the heat and cold is oppressive and affects his children's health.
