Yeudy is a young entrepreneur of 34. He lives with his family in a community called Cartagena, in Guanacaste province. This province's economy is based mainly on livestock raising, though beekeeping and aquaculture are also common. Yeudy is a disabled person who is only able to get about in a wheelchair because he does not have any movement in his legs. He has a small grocery store which is his only source of income. He helps his family financially and covers his own financial needs through this business. Yeudy is requesting a loan for 600,000 colones to buy products so that he can further stock his grocery store. He would like, in this way, to improve his business and his quality of life. He would also like to contribute financially toward his family. Yeudy is a member of the Cartagena Community Loan Company, one of EDESA's 150 member organizations in Costa Rica. He is very happy because he has found an excellent way of obtaining financing so that he can grow his business.

Juan María is an older adult of 82 years of age and a constant worker. He lives with his family in a community called Cartagena in the province of Guanacaste. This province's economy is based principally off of livestock, although beekeeping and aquaculture are also carried out in this region. Juan María needs to repair his vehicle as it's the only means by which he makes a living, transporting the community's people from one place to another. He is requesting a loan for six hundred thousand colones (¢600.000) to buy the vehicle's spare parts and paint it. This is so that he can continue offering this service since with this it guarantees an income to cover his basic necessities. Juan María is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal de Cartagena (Communal Loan Business of Cartagena), one of the 150 member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. He is very happy because he found an excellent form of financing in order to repair his vehicle and continue working.

Xinia is a 52 year old woman living with one of her children in a community in the south of Costa Rica located in Santa Cruz de Guanacste. The local economy is based on farming and animal husbandry where growing tubers, coffee, corn, beans and raising livestock predominate. Tourism is important in this zone mainly because of the beautiful beaches this province has. Xinia and her son set up a space in their back yard to wash cars and it’s been very well received because in the sector where she lives there is quite a bit of vehicular traffic which produces a large clientele for her. However, she does not have all the equipment like special hoses, vacuum cleaners and other tools for this activity and this is why she’s asking for a one-million colones (¢1.000.000) loan to buy said equipment. She hopes to get ahead with her son and have better living conditions and the two of them together face monthly household expenses and to see their business become prosperous. Xinia is a member of the Florida S.A. communal bank, one of the more than 150 member organizations of EDESA. This will be her first loan with the firm and with it she hopes to continue growing both personally and businesswise as well as to participate actively in her community’s credit organization.

Adelaida, 46, lives with her husband and three children in a community in the south of Costa Rica located in Santa Cruz de Guanacaste. The local economy is based on farming and animal husbandry where growing tubers, coffee, corn and beans and raising livestock stand out. Tourism is notable in the zone because of the beautiful beaches this province has. Adelaida does domestic chores and tends to her husband and children but also carries out activities that make it possible for her to earn money and help with daily household expenses. She’s asking for a one million colones (¢1.000.000) loan to buy building materials and supplies and to pay labor costs because she needs to repair the roof, the floor and some walls; to paint the house and to finish the washroom. Her wish is to repair her house before the rainy season starts in order not to have any problems due to the severe weather that’s approaching. Adelaida is a member of the Florida S.A. communal credit firm, one of EDESA’s 150 member organizations. This will be her first loan with the firm and with it she hopes to improve the physical conditions of her home and to live comfortably alongside her family.

Doris is 37 years old and lives in San Cristóbal Norte, Costa Rica, which is a rural community located 45 kilometers South of San José. This is a rather mountanous area where there is commercial activity, agriculture (vegetables, coffee, and other crops), craftmanship, ranching, and many other activities. Doris has a small variety store. She sells all sorts of products related to her business and has received a very favorable response from her neighbors. Her micro company has helped her family's living conditions change little by little. That is why she wants to expand and further supply her business. Even though she is just starting out in this business she feels that she can make it grow. She currently requires a 500.000 colon loan to purchase merchandise, since she started her business only three months ago. This activity allows her to contribute to covering the family's basic expenses as well as her own. Her desire is to make her company bigger and to increase her customer base. Doris is a member of the community bank San Cristóbal Norte (SACRIN), one of EDESA's 110 partner organizations in Costa Rica.

Dionisio is a 43-year-old man who lives with his family in a community in the southern zone of Costa Rica, located in Concepción de Pilas, Puntarenas. The local economy is based on agriculture, mainly livestock and the harvesting of tubers, coffee, corn, and beans. Dionisio is requesting a loan of ₡1,000,000 (one million colones) for the purchase of ñampí [a tuber] seeds and insecticides. He will also use the loan to pay labourers, as he needs help with production and maintenance (applying fertilizer and fungicides to protect the crops). Through his vigilant care of his developing crops, he will be able to offer quality products to his customers and reach his sales goal. Furthermore, he will be able to meet his obligations and payments in order to get his family ahead. Dionisio is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal denla Danta S.A, one of the 150 community credit enterprises in Costa Rica.
