Vaqif is 51 years old, married, and a father of two children. He is an IDP (internally displaced person) and lives with his wife and children in the Bilasuvar IDP Settlement. He is a Jabrayili refugee. Vaqif grows fruits and vegetables. He plants tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and other vegetables and fruits. He says even though this business is very hard, he and his wife have been handling the business for 10 years without any difficulty.

Vaqif grows vegetables and fruits and sells them in the bazaar. His income from vegetable and fruit sales is 150 AZN. He has more plans for the future, such as getting more land for cultivation. He is looking forward to increased sales in the coming summer because people purchase fruit a lot. Now he needs a loan of 1,800 AZN. This loan is for the purpose of getting new fertilizers and seeds. It will help him to grow more vegetables and fruits in order to get more revenue in the coming summer, which will help him to support his family’s needs. He has a good loan history. This is his fourth loan.

 $625 of $900 raised.

Started raising funds on Jun 11, 2013

Edgar’s a young, 25-year-old farmer who works in agriculture in a small community located in the outskirts of Estelí. He’s grateful for the opportunity of getting and creating his first credit history. He used the loan to buy supplies for his onion crop. He wants to use this loan to buy urea, complete manure and insecticide to cultivate one-half manzana [Central American unit of land measurement] of tomatoes. Tomato harvests are well-priced in the market and he’d be able to earn high profits that would yield surpluses for his family’s socio-economic maintenance and to be able to expand his area of cultivation. Once this loan is financed his next step would be to cultivate another parcel of tomatoes to harvest this product in a staggered way.

 $1,825 of $2,125 raised.

Started raising funds on Jun 19, 2013

The “Flor de Retama” communal bank will start the third cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Senkata Focal Center. It has six members led by a governing board presided over by Adelaida. The communal bank members carry out a variety of occupations among which are: ‘aguayo’ [traditional sling] weaving, clothing sale, blanket sales, mobile phone sales, American clothes sales, bag sales and knitwear sales.

The loan they’ll take out will benefit small micro businesswomen like Adelaida. She indicates that she’s been a member of Pro Mujer for a year having joined thanks to an invitation from fellow group members who are members of the institution. She currently has a business weaving ‘bayetas’ [woolen scarf] and ‘aguayos.’ She lets it be known that she started the business several years ago on her own initiative.

The loan she’ll take out now is to increase capital. She will buy wool from wholesalers in the city of La Paz and after manufacture will sell them on order. This way of working allows her to generate resources to support her family since she’s separated and has four children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the credit, the health area and the training sessions.

Started raising funds on Jun 19, 2013

Virginia is 39 years old. She lives with her husband and 3 children in an adobe house.

Her main source of income is agriculture and since she began working in the field she has received the support of her husband who performs various activities for the production of cocoa and organic coffee.

Virginia has a 2 hectare plot where she has several cocoa trees and she tries to keep them in good condition with organic fertilizer and by removing the weeds that constantly grow. She hires workers for the harvest and pays them an advance fee to help gather the mature fruit so they can be dried later and then sold at the collection centers in her area.

One of her main long-term goals is to buy another plot in order to expand her production of cocoa and increase her income.

This is her third loan with Kiva and she is grateful for the financial support so she can get ahead. At this time she is requesting 2,000 soles in order to buy nursery plants to replace the outdated cocoa trees.

Adela, 34, is married and has three children she lives with in a house built of adobe. Three years ago she used money she’d saved working in the fields and opened a store to sell farm supplies like organic manure and anti-pest powder for the most damaging pests in her zone. She decided to go into this business because there aren’t many similar stores in her area and this allows her to have good sales to support her family. She likes her work very much because she doesn’t have to leave home and can care for her children. When she needs merchandise she has to request it from suppliers that live in a city very near her own. Her main objective is to expand the business with more variety of products and at the same time replace the adobe in her house with bricks and cement. On this occasion she wants to ask for 2,000 new soles to stock her store purchasing organic manure for it.

The communal bank “Armada Boliviana” will begin its eleventh cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Los Andes Regional Office. It is composed of 8 members and is led by a board of directors where Beatriz is the president. The businesses carried out by the members of the communal bank are varied, among them are: selling bricklayers tools, soft drink sales, sewing jackets, selling binders and folder covers, sewing aprons, vegetable sales, selling baby clothing, perfume sales, cheese sales, candy sales, blanket weaving and condiment sales.

The loan that they will take out will benefit the small group of businesswomen of which Beatriz is a member. She says that she joined Pro Mujer several years ago, entering at the invitation of an advisor of the institution who visited her at home. At present she has a business of sewing and selling aprons. She makes known that she started this business with a small amount of resources that she was able to buy with the loans taken out from Pro Mujer.

The loan that she will take out now is for the increase of capital to buy fabric that she will acquire from the markets wholesale and subsequently make into what she will sell in her sales space. This form of work allows her to generate resources to maintain her household as much as possible as she is married and has three children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she likes the health services.

Perancak village is quite far away from the city, so the pig business is in great demand in this village. Ni Made, who is a housewife with one child, also developed pig farming at her home.

With the group loan amounting to 2M IDR per person, Ni Made plans to buy four piglets for fattening at a price of 400,000 IDR per piglet, to renovate the cages, and to meet the feed requirements for the next six months. Ni Made expects a profit of 400,000 IDR per month.

Ni Made plans to use the profits for the purposes of the family and to set aside to add to her capital. This needs to be done because her husband's income as a farmer is not enough to meet the needs of her family. Because her son had to go to school this year, Ni Made needs to further improve the results of fattening pigs.

Ni Made also hopes MUK can help in terms of counseling her group about how best to raise pigs.
