I loan because:
Global development is a process that involves a two-pronged approach. Large corporations can have positive effects in the communities and areas where they operate (and yes, they can have negative effects, too, which is the risk of working in an imperfect system), but the reality is that even in the best of situations, the "trickle down" results of top-down development only reaches about 80-85% of any given population. The remaining 15-20% matter just as much as the top. That's why I give: I understand that there needs to be a bottom-up, grassroots effort to compensate for the shortcomings of traditional economics, and I know I am able to be a part of it. My faith calls me to respond to the needs of people in the world, and Kiva is a great way to help me live out what I believe is ultimately Christ's call in my life and the lives of those who follow him: Love God, love others.
About me:
I'm a teacher by training, and as a youth pastor I get to teach kids something I'm passionate about besides literature: God's love and our response to that love. I'm also hoping to apply my education to some very important development work that is going to need to take place in southern Africa in the very near future.
