Kiva's lending strategy is twofold in its brilliance — not only are we not donating, and thereby giving away, our money, (only its liquidity!) we're also not creating a situation where recipients could become dependent on foreign aid or handouts; they use the money to expand their endeavors in such a way that it's sustainable (and they prove it by repaying the loan.)
