I loan because:
I think that one of the best ways to help people in the long term, is to empower them to help themselves. This is a wonderful opportunity to put one's money to work over and over again as it is loaned to one entrepreneur, repaid and loaned out again to another entrepreneur. Instead of going out for a meal, one can take the money and loan it to a Developing World entrepreneur who in turn can finance the establishment/expansion of his/her business so he/she can provide shelter, food, clothing and education for his/her dependents and create for herself/himself a happier life and a brighter future. The loans aren't just helping out the entrepreneur, but also the people/enterprises from who he/she makes purchases to start/expand/operate his/her business. Look at the economic impact that a business/company has on a community/town/city in your own country and imagine the impact that a few successful entrepreneurial endeavours might have on their communities. It creates a healthy community spirit/environment for these communities to really flourish economically, socially, etc.
