In the early 1990s, hundreds of thousands of peasants in central China contracted HIV when they sold blood to alleviate their poverty, leaving behind a generation of HIV-positive children whose caretakers are unprepared for managing their treatment.
Pediatric AIDS Treatment Support trains and employs local community health workers who educate caretakers and provide HIV-positive children with comprehensive medical support, access to life-saving drugs, and a monthly food package.
