I loan because:
I actually started an informal microlending circle for one individual in Kenya whom I happened to meet (a former student of mine), and I got together a group of people to lend him 2500 dollars to buy a house for his family and for renting out portions of for income to support his children's school fees. It seemed so easy to get a small amount together from a large group of people in the North, and make a big difference in one person's family. When he pays it back we will lend to someone else, but finding suitable people who can use the money is quite a chore, apart from such happenstance personal contacts. When I heard about Kiva on the New York Times, this seemed the answer!
About me:
I translate books on history, law, anthropology, and politics into English (from French, Hungarian or Dutch). I work in an office for an agency and also do some translation on a freelance basis, as an independent businessperson.
