I loan because:
I believe that to work against poverty and hunger it to work for world peace. ~~~ I loan because of my ethical and religious beliefs. First, I think that fighting poverty and hunger are key aspects of working towards world peace and improving the world. I think that micro-loans are one aspect of that, and are a supplement to traditional charity. Traditional charity provides the basics. A person without clean water, shelter, food, basic education, or who is dealing with socio-political upheavals (military uprisings, genocides, landmine areas), would need "traditional" charity. This is where we simply help those in grave need. One cannot "make a loan" for clean water, a sanitary latrine, landmine clearing, malaria medications, or dengue fever vaccines. The value of Kiva is in areas where there is already an infrastructure and stable (or stable-ish) government and economy. This allows people to raise themselves out of survival and into a more self-sustaining living. With access to small business loans, people can improve not only the lives of their family, but strengthen their immediate community. As people create successful local businesses and services, more money circulates through a community, raising the standard of living. I do not think that Kiva is a solution to poverty. I do think it is an important tool in fighting poverty, and a way to shrink the edges of poverty, lifting people out of it through their own work. My second reason is more religious. I believe that good deeds propagate, and successful loans improve the lives of others indirectly. I do, and always have, believed in reincarnation. I believe we not only have an obligation to improve the world for our children, but also for our souls when they return. I think that by improving the world, we expand the growth possible by successive generations, be they our descendants or ourselves. I think that this kind of mindset is ultimately necessary for mankind. I believe we have to start improving the present so that humankind as a collective can grow.
