- I loan because:
- Once, I met a young woman in an airport waiting lounge who had a distinctive tattoo of a mathematical formula on her left arm. Although I had my camera with me, I was too shy to ask her to let me photograph her tattoo. I wasn't too shy to ask her what it meant, though. She told me she was a graduate student of economics; the formula represented an equation for distribution of wealth. (Unless I'm mistaken, the tattoo was the Gini Coefficient, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient.)
How appealing it was for her to use her intellect in ways that will improve the world as well as herself. And how compelling that she literally wore what she carried in her heart on her sleeve.
What better way to export democracy than through its handmaiden, capitalism? I hope that our collective generosity pays economic, social, and political dividends around the world, where we most need it.
