I loan because:
I want to help people who desire to be a productive part of their society. I prefer to loan to those who are either producing goods on their own, selling items locally produced (not imported), or providing a needed service in their local community. I encourage others involved with Kiva to also have this critical view for lending. We as a community must avoid becoming the funding source for cheap imported goods to those who receive loans, especially when it undercuts the ability of their local economy to then produce those same goods. Import businesses should be a last resort, and only done if there is absolutely no hope for starting local production. It is also important not to try and leverage a change in cultures just for the sake of inserting a business.
About me:
I live in the United States, and work in the U.S. and abroad. In my job, I try to solve complex problems that exist in our society.
