- Moved back to the mainland a few years ago from the Big Island. Lived in Hilo, Hawaii for 10 years. Enjoyed Kailua-Kona on the weekends. Hilo has black sand and the Kona side has white sand. Both sides have crystal clear water for most of the year. Many people ask me is it safe to swim at night in Hawaii? The answer is yes. I used to swim at night all the time at Mauna Kea Beach, Waimea, HI. Make sure you have a bright waterproof under water LED light and watch out for Box Jelly at night!
