I loan because:
(Compiled in 2006):
* Almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.
* At least 80% live on less than $10 a day.
* The poorest 40% of the world’s population account for 5% of global income. The richest 20% account for 75%.
* Based on enrolment data, about 72 million children of primary school age in the developing world were not in school in 2005; 57% of them were girls. And these are regarded as optimistic numbers...
* Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.
* Less than 1% of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.
* In 2005, the wealthiest 10% of the world accounted for 60% of total private consumption. The poorest 10%? Just 0.5%.
* 1.6 billion people — a quarter of humanity — live without electricity.
* For every $1 in aid a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment.
* The poorer the country, the more likely it is that debt repayments are being extracted directly from people who neither contracted the loans nor received any of the money.
* A mere 12% of the world’s population use 85% of its water (by the way, the 12% in question do not live in the Third World).
