I loan because:
For many years I have been involved with development work through international organizations. I travel to more than 25 countries in the world and have been in many of the poorest areas (including Bangladesh, the north east of Brazil, Bolivia, Haiti, Indonesia, Philippines...). Many loans and grants do not produce the "results on the ground" that they project; actually more often than not they don't! More than ten years ago I started my own development work by sponsoring children in rural villages around the globe. Through Plan USA my wife and me now keep contact with more than a dozen kids which we adopted as "our foster kids". Work on my own family history, especially in the last few years, brought back cherished memories about our family tradition of entrepreneurship. From grandfather's time in the early 1900s, to my dad's time in the second half of the 20th century, till now, my family has been strong promoters of entrepreneurship. It is in that tradition that I started two years ago to lend to KIVA entrepreneurs. I like to help people who take initiative, who want to establish or grow a small business; I favor expanding trade and markets for products made by poor people. Last but not least, I like to be "a banker", assemble a portfolio of loans that is well balanced, regionally as well as by sector, and test my skills in picking entrepreneurs that will make a profit, increase their income, and have no problems repaying their loan. I strongly belief that making loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries is one of the greatest contributions one can make.
About me:
I follow daily the developments in financial markets and study the rapid growth and evolution of micro-finance and social enterprises; I am keenly interested in the developments in alternative medicine and health care. My interest in family history and in the use of DNA to enhance findings in genealogy i.e genetic genealogy, have led me to rediscover a valuable family tradition of entrepreneurship, taking risks, dreaming the impossible, and helping others to achieve their goals.
