Bio:
Ellen Willems was born and raised in Belgium. She earned a Master's in Economics from the University of Ghent, where her thesis described how family and community social networks help mitigate economic risks in societies that lack formal social safety nets. Prior to and throughout her studies she lived and traveled extensively in South and Central America. It was during those travels that Ellen was first introduced to the concept of microfinance. A group of women, who were part of a village bank, had started a profitable weaving business that allowed them to provide a better standard of living for their families. Ellen is excited to apply her foundation in social economics and broad cultural awareness to provide people like those women with effective tools that will enable them to lift themselves out of poverty. After returning from her Kiva Fellowship in Ecuador, Ellen intends to launch her professional career in international microfinance.
