Kiva Lender Darren & Tammy
Location:
Missouri, United States
I loan because:
We are leaving Kiva due to their shift away from their stated mission and values, which were what attracted us to Kiva in the first place. We are disappointed with Kiva's shift in values to include First World borrowers. We feel strongly that the situation for so many Americans is truly lamentable, and it is shameful that US leaders have allowed financial, healthcare, education and housing problems to get so far out of control, but these are all problems we Americans can (and should) fix for ourselves, and we cannot ask entrepreneurs in the world's poorest regions to compete with US borrowers for funding.
We actively support US programs to help America's poor and the families of her fallen heroes, and we agree that the US should start by taking care of its own poor, but we disagree that it is Kiva lenders' place to fill the gap.
We will not lend through Kiva until the organization returns to its original values and stated mission of alleviating world poverty by providing microlending resources to the world's most impoverished areas. If Kiva makes the necessary course correction to return to its core values by limiting its borrowers to Third World entrepreneurs without access to traditional banking resources, we will happily return.
