I have money available, and this seems like a really practical and efficient way of mobilising capital for people who otherwise find it really tough to make a living. Come on, everyone in the developed world can find US$25 to commit. I also like the way the Kiva site works, making good use of the internet technology. It's a lot more useful than Myspace or Facebook.
I have been a journalist (mainly in Latin America), a volunteer in Africa, and a serial starter of companies, mainly in technology-based publishing ventures. I am now a semi-retired investor in start-up companies.
