I loan because:
I have a fervent interest in international development and microfinance, especially as it applies to Latin America. Having traveled, studied, and volunteered abroad, as well as having been born and raised abroad, I feel a particularly strong imperative to foster the kind of change that puts lesser-developed communities at the forefront of development, through it building a more equitable global society. Becoming a Kiva Fellow in 2011 brought me closer to a shared sense of purpose and deeper into the fabric of Kiva and through it I was not only able to gain essential in the field experience in microfinance, but I was also exposed to the wonderfully entrepreneurial spirit of the people living in developing communities. More than anything, I was impressed with the understanding that it is not a lack of innovation, desire, or drive that keeps people living in sub-standard conditions, but rather a lack of access to resources.
About me:
Mandela Marketplace is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with local residents, family farmers, and community-based businesses to improve health, create wealth, and build assets through cooperative food enterprises in low income communities.

Bio:
Mariela was born in Venezuela, grew up in California, has family in El Salvador, and has traveled, studied, and volunteered around the world. Driven by all that she has experience in between, she hopes to serve as a catalyst to help change pervasive global inequalities that force people to endure lives of abject poverty. Mariela attended the University of California, Davis where she acquired a B.A. in Economics with honors, and a B.A. in International Relations with honors. She later went on to pursue a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies with an emphasis in Development at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt she spent a summer in Brazil studying race, development, and social inequality in partnership with the University of Sao Paolo and the Federal University of Bahia. Mariela sees becoming a Kiva Fellow as the next crucial step in her continued commitment to sustainable development by supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of the people living in developing communities.
