Ama M., forty-nine, is a widowed mother of six children, four of whom are males and two females. According to her, she lost her husband three years ago. One of her children is in the university and two are learning trades. The rest are in the junior high and the basic schools. She says she is the sole provider for the children. Ama lives with her children in a rented apartment in Mampong in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Ama works very hard to provide for her family. She is a food vendor. She prepares and sells a local dish called “Ga-Kenkey”. Kenkey is produced from corn dough. The cooked dough is balled in corn husk and cooked again. It is served hot with pepper and fried fish. She sells by the street in the evenings. Ama has been in this business for three years. She wants a loan to procure bags of maize and other ingredients in bulk.
