Nabaterrega S. is a 50-year-old single mother of nine, with children aged 14 to 30. She rents a two-room house where she lives with her family. She also takes care of additional family members and the family has three meals a day. Her greatest expense in a month is tuition fees for her children.

She sells chicken on a retail basis in the market and rents the space where she does business. She works seven days a week and has about five customers a day. She has done this business for seven years now and has not done any other business.

The main challenge she faces in her business is that people buy chicken seasonally, especially during the festive season. She has worked with MCDT for ten years and has received 20 loans from MCDT so far. The reason why she chose to work with MCDT is because it lends to the poor. She will use this loan to increase her stock, and she also hopes to continue growing her business.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
