This is a small loan to three people, all of whom are residents of Battambang Province. The group leader, Mrs. S., aged 43, currently earns a living selling sweet cake in the village, and earning an average of $2.50 per day. To earn additional income, S. is asking for a loan to begin raising pigs.

Another family's income source is the job of the husband, Channom, who works as a motorcycle taxi driver and earns approximately $4 each day. The couple has been married for years and has given birth to three children who are students in the primary school.

The other borrowers are S. and P.. S., is a widow who raises poultry from home to earn a living. She needs a loan to buy more poultry to raise. P. is a widowed mother who sells breakfast foods. She is applying for a loan to purchase the necessary ingredients for her business.

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
