Afia Frimah

Afia Frimah is the 50-year-old divorced mother of two sons and two daughters. One of her children has completed senior high school and yearns for more eduction, while the rest are in senior high, junior high and primary schools. Afia lives with the children in a rented apartment in Dormaa Ahenkro, an agricultural community in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, about a 45-minute drive from Sunyani, the regional capital.

She works very hard to support the family and, most importantly, to settle the children’s school bills. One of her businesses is selling iced water by the roadside to passersby and other road users, procuring the water in sachets from distributers. On sunny days, patronage is strong. Afia also sells kerosene, a fuel used in lanterns and stoves, to the people in her neighborhood. She has been in business 15 years and is now requesting a loan to procure the sachet water and fuel in bulk. Her goal is to give all her children the best education she can afford.
