The Benkadi group is made up of six women, all married, and averaging 32 years of age and 4 children. They live in monogamous households in the Railsko neighborhood in Markala (fourth administrative region of Mali). The members of the group got acquainted through the traditional association Parissain. They run various money-making businesses, such as selling rice, making local non-alcoholic beverages, and vegetables transformation (onions, tomatoes). Their good organization and their devotion to their businesses got them help from US AID, which provided them with dryers and a machine to glue sachets.

To improve their businesses, they decided to join Kiva's partner, Soro Yiriwaso, which they got to know through the General Assembly of the Artisans of Markala. After having repaid the former loans without problems, they are now seeking their third solidarity loan (group loan). They will use it to buy 6 sacks of sugar, 2 sacks of ginger, 1 sacks of roselle, 24 flasks of mint essence, 120 plastic bags, and 32 pieces of wax pagnes (colorful African cloth). They get their weekly supplies of ingredients for the local beverages at the Diamarabougou market, the wax pagnes are purchased at the Ségou grand market. They retail for cash or on credit, at home and at the market in Diamarabougou to a clientele comprising men and women. They hope to turn an average monthly profit of XOF 38'000 (ca US$ 80), to be used to help with the family expenses. They ambition to purchase a freezer.

PREMIER ET DERNIER FEED BACK

Entrepreneur: Benkadi Group
Location: Segou, Mali
