Gladys A. is 51 years old. She is divorced and has three children. One is still in school while the rest have completed senior high school and have been working for a while. Gladys lives with her children in a rented apartment in a suburb of Accra. She is a retailer of charcoal and fries yam and fish for her local community. Charcoal is a very popular source of energy for cooking in almost all the traditional Ghanaian homes. Gladys obtains her supply of charcoal from the villages and retails them to her customers. She wants to use the loan to buy more supplies of charcoal, yam, fish, and pepper to increase her stock and earn the proceeds she needs to get her own store.
