Kigeny Fatuma is a 30 year old married lady living in a small growing trading centre near Mbale town. She has five children, two are in lower primary while the others are still at home. They live in their own house they constructed and part of the building is being rented to tenants.

Fatuma started her business in 2002 with a small capital of about $100 and up to now she has managed to raise it to about $300. As of now, her greatest challenge is enough capital to improve on her business by adding more stock in the retail shop.

Therefore, she has applied for a loan worth $500 and she has good capacity for repayment.

Fatuma lives to say thank you.

She says the pressure, the worst conditions she used to have from other financial institution is over, and never to be realised again.

The conditions of this loan money that was given to her is so good and helpful. The favouring period is of making every difficulty that used to be around to leave and only realise love, unity and prosperity excel.

Dear lender thanks alot for releaving many from the prior pressure they used to have.

The loan that was given to her has made her realise many profits in the shortens time possible and she acquire a piece of land that she is going to construct a house.

What a great achievement.

Thanks alot God mightly bless you all.

Built a new home for the family!

Entrepreneur: Kigenyi Fatuma
Location: Mbale, Uganda

Fatuma used her loan to purchase additional inventory for her store. What may not be obvious is that many times someone will come to a small store in Africa and they will be out of a staple item, simply because they could not afford stock. Having additional inventory will allow Fatuma to have ample stock so that she may better meet her customer’s demand and increase her business. She noted that her business has increased in size since getting her loan.

Fatuma said that she has been using profits from her sales to repay the loan, and to help her family. She was most excited because she has used some of the profits from her business to build a house for her family. I was able to see her at her house with some of her children today, and it was quite remarkable to see the difference the loan and your help has made in her life. She is quite grateful!

She wanted to send thanks to the lenders because the loan has helped to increase her family’s standard of living and has enabled her to pay school fees. School fees in Uganda can be very expensive for the very poor, and if a family cannot pay to send a child to school the child can’t get an education. In addition, some of the cheapest schools have very low standards and provide a poor education. Many people, like Fatuma, recognize the incredible importance of sending their children to school, and view it as a way for the child to one day escape poverty.

Loan Refunded

Entrepreneur: Kigenyi Fatuma
Location: Mbale, Uganda

This loan has been refunded for the following reason:

As you may be aware, each business on Kiva's website is posted by one of Kiva's 60+ Field Partners in 39 developing countries. A Field Partner is an independent microfinance institution that has a history of lending to the poor for a social purpose. They screen each entrepreneur, post his/her profile on the Kiva website, and administer your loan.

Kiva routinely audits each Field Partner to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered to the entrepreneur you've selected. In the course of auditing our Field Partner, Women's Initiative to Eradicate Poverty (WITEP) in Uganda, Kiva discovered that some entrepreneurs were not receiving the full amount of their loans.

This violates Kiva's policies and we have terminated our relationship with WITEP. All of the loans made to entrepreneurs served by this Field Partner have been refunded. We hope you realize that our audit uncovered a true exception to the norm; the vast majority of our Field Partners administer your loans with the highest integrity. Kiva will continue to audit Field Partners to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered and to make our website a model for transparency in international development.

To help inform your choice of Field Partner as well as entrepreneur, we have launched a new feature on the site which helps you evaluate the Field Partner's performance in your lending decision. See www.kiva.org/about/partners/ for details.

We hope that you give lending to the working poor another chance by re-lending your Kiva Credit to a new entrepreneur on our site.
