Stella Agyeman

Stella Agyeman is forty two years old. She is divorced but has given birth to two sons. One of them has completed junior high school while the other is in the final year.

Stella lives with her two sons in a rented house. They live in a farming/business community called Offinso in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Stella says it has not been easy providing for herself as well as her two sons since her ex-husband does not show any concern.

She trades in ‘gari’, tomatoes and vegetable cooking oil on a table top in the local market. Gari is a local delicacy produced from cassava. The milled cassava is thoroughly squeezed of water by putting it under pressure. It is then fried in a hot metal pan over a strong fire. It is either served hot with cooked beans and oil, or cold with sugar, milk and roasted groundnut.

She buys bags of gari and cooking oil from nearby towns at affordable prices. She distributes the gari mostly to the food vendors in her community. Stella has been in business for three years. She wants a loan to buy goods in large quantities so she can increase her profit margin to provide for her children.
