Muungano Group

Khadija Mwinshehe, age 44, is married with four children ages 27, 25, 22 and 18. She has a grocery and a retail shop where she sells food. She started these businesses in 1994 and works daily from 7am until 11pm. She is able to earn a monthly profit of about $800.

This will be Khadija’s six’s loan from Tujijenge Tanzania. She used the first five to increase the stock in both businesses and has paid the loans back successfully. She now hopes for a new loan, part of it to increase her stock, to buy chairs for the grocery and to buy an ironing table for home use.

Khadija will share this loan with subgroup A of the Muungano group. The subgroup has 7 members, who run shops, grocery, sell clothes, food and charcoal. These members hold each other accountable in paying back their loans. In the picture, Khadija is 1st on the right.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
