In this Group: Sao, Kim, Chim
This is a small group of three members. Mrs. P. is selected to be the group leader. Mrs. Sao P., 51, is a hairdresser and provides laundry services. Her business is located in Battambang Province. She is widowed with three children, one of whom is married and two who are single. Her son, Mr. Sao Sony, 19, works a lathe and can earn money to support the family's expenses. To increase her son business, P. needs a loan for her son to purchase a lathe for his own business. Other two members are: Mrs. Kim C. T., 48, on staff at a local NGO, who needs a loan to run a new business of a decorating business, and Mrs. Chim B., who is selling noodle soups. She needs a loan to expand her business by purchasing ingredients.

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
