Subject: A loan update for Ignacia Teresa Berrios
Location: Leon, Nicaragua

Ignacia Teresa Barrios operates a delightful bakery just outside the city center. Upon entering her small establishment, I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the smell of eggs, sugar, and flour, all fused together into the goodness of a loaf of freshly baked bread offered to me as an arrival gift. The loan update thus began as we broke bread, together.

Ignacia Teresa first came to Fundación León 2000 with few expectations of how a loan would impact her business, and accordingly, her life. In her wildest dreams, Ignacia Teresa never imagined she could qualify for a business loan from a financial institution, nor be able to pay it back according to a set repayment plan. Nonetheless, she decided to take the plunge. A trip to Fundación León, a stack of paper, and a load of fiscal responsibility transported Ignacia Teresa from zero working capital to the proud owner of financial debt, and more importantly, financial hope.

With her loan of $775, Ignacia Teresa was able to invest in new production equipment that allowed her to produce a greater variety baked goods. With this simple improvement, her business became more competitive by attracting customers looking for a more diverse inventory of goods. As her income increased (she estimates a 15-20% increase in profits over the course of the 4-month loan), Ignacia Teresa was able to hire a pair of underprivileged teenagers from the neighborhood. The beneficence of a working capital loan passed on from Kiva lenders evolved into a “pay-it-forward” credo passed on to a younger generation in need of structure, working experience, and financial responsibility. While not always clearly depicted in a borrower’s business profile, the simple act of lending through Kiva often transcends its basic context, finding new relevance as a gift of community development in the truly impoverished realms of the world.

As for the future, Ignacia Teresa dreams of opening a larger store, installing it with a slew of immaculate glass display cases, and filling them to the brim with delectable delicacies. She understands the increased financial responsibility involved with taking out larger micro loans, but balances such judgments by maintaining awareness of her business’ social value in the community. For Ignacia Teresa, the latter outweighs the former.

Ignacia Teresa would like to personally thank all Kiva lenders who helped her achieve a level of professional success and personal fulfillment unimaginable before receiving a micro loan. She hopes to garner further support from Kiva lenders in future small business endeavors.

A glance at Fundación León 2000: Fundación León 2000 is a micro finance institution with reliable service and credit leaders targeted at the micro, small and medium enterprises. Fundación León supports the socio-economic development of the west of the country, providing financial and non-financial services that are agile, efficient and of high quality. Recently, the Mix Market, an organization that reviews the overall transparency, quality, and reliability of a micro finance institution’s process and information, recognized Fundación León with the highest award of five stars (twice; in 2005 and 2006).

A glance at León, Nicaragua: León is the second largest city in Nicaragua, with a population hovering around 175,000 inhabitants [in 2005]. It was founded by the Spaniards as Santiago de los Caballeros de León and rivals Granada, Nicaragua, in the number of historic Spanish colonial homes and churches. León is located about 50 miles northwest of Managua, and only 11 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Although less populous than Managua, León has long been the intellectual center of the nation after its university was founded in 1813. León is also an important industrial, agricultural (sugar cane, cattle, peanut, plantain, sorghum) and commercial center for Nicaragua.
