This is Kadiatu Koroma, Umu Sesay and Ya Fola Kamara. They named their group "Rakom Group." They are local entrepreneurs from the town of Makeni. This is the third time they’ve received a Kiva loan through SMT. Most recently, each group memeber received a loan of Le 500,000. That loan was a great help to members of this group. It enabled them to expand their businesses, make more profit, and improve their living conditions. Having repaid their last loan successfully, they are again asking for the same amount of Le 500,000 each. They prefer receiving a loan of Le 500,000, because they can manage this amount well.

Kadiatu (right) is the leader of the group. She is thirty-seven years of age. She was born in Makeni in northern Sierra Leone. She is married to a businessman and they have two children together. Kadiatu sells rice and salt. She has been in the business for over ten years now.

With this new loan, Kadiatu will expand her business. She will buy more bags of salt and a bag of rice. She will be able to get at least twenty bags of salt. She prefers buying more salt, because salt sells faster than rice. A bag of salt will cost her Le 17,000 and a bag of rice, Le 108,000. She sends her husband’s younger brother to buy the goods for her in Freetown.

Kadiatu faces a few challenges in her business. Sometimes sales are a bit difficult, especially when most of the customers travel to makeshift business centers to buy goods, often at slashed prices. Additionally, her husband is not comfortable with her traveling to Freetown by herself to purchase the goods. There is the added expense of sending her brother-in-law instead.

Kadiatu’s immediate goal is to make a better life for herself. She would like to see her business expand, because this makes her life happy and comfortable.
