Her younger son is 14 years old and in his third year of secondary school. Juana would like to maintain an active, secure business so that she can give her sons a promising future. She hopes that her sons will graduate and wants to provide them with a house that they can freely enjoy.

She started making tortillas in her home and neighbors would come by to purchase them. Later she decided to establish her business to sell her tortillas more widely. Important Information About This Loan
Kiva recently posted a message regarding the “No Pago” movement in Nicaragua (a movement for non-payment of loans). This movement, supported mostly by farmers of the north of Nicaragua with ties to the left-wing party in Nicaragua, has been organizing protests and had submitted a law to the government to create a moratorium on debt repayment. Initially it was unclear whether this law would pass, which would have had severe effects on the banking and microfinance industry in Nicaragua. However in the last month the executive branch rejected the law in its current form. The No Pago movement still exists but seems to have lost some steam. There is still a possibility that a law encouraging more restructuring of loans could pass next year, and microfinance institutions are voluntarily restructuring loans to delinquent borrowers, still increasing risk of lending in Nicaragua. However indications are that the situation is less dramatic than before.

A loan update for Juana de la Cruz Garcia

Entrepreneur: Juana De La Cruz Garcia
Location: Leon, Nicaragua

It has been over 4 months since Juana de la Cruz Garcia first received a Kiva loan, and in that time, her business of cooking and selling tortillas and black beans from her home has improved modestly. In fact, Juana de la Cruz admits that the business' profits have not increased dramatically, but that the loan has helped her maintain the business and keep her family afloat during the economic downturn. After recently visiting her to see how her business is faring, Juana de la Cruz expressed to me how grateful she is to have received the $500 loan from Kiva lenders. She plans to continue borrowing capital to expand her small restaurant business once economic conditions for doing so are more favorable.

Juana de la Cruz Garcia would like to personally thank all Kiva lenders who helped her achieve a level of professional success and personal fulfillment unimaginable before receiving a micro loan. She hopes to garner further support from Kiva lenders in future small business endeavors. Please enjoy the borrower update video that explains how the loan has affected her business, and depicts her dreams for the future.
