Monica is a 32-year old widow and mother of a 12-year old daughter. To make ends meet after her husband died in Uganda’s civil war 11 years ago, Monica moved with her daughter to the village of Kitintale in Kampala and opened a hair salon with the little savings she had. She was previously an employee in a salon, where she learned her skills. She wins business by keeping a very clean shop and through her attentive customer service and hair care expertise.

This is Monica’s first loan with BRAC. She is using the loan to buy a refrigerator so she can sell cold drinks to her customers. She is also stocking up on braids, chemicals and other beauty supplies for the busy upcoming festive season. She charges on average 10,000 Ush to braid a customer’s hair and she services eight customers in a typical week.

Monica wants to introduce a barber chair to her salon so she can expand her clientele to include men. She dreams of building a house for her and her daughter on a small plot of land she inherited from her deceased mother. Monica supplements her income by growing cassava, beans and maize. Combined, she can afford to keep her daughter in school.
