Nouhk's village takes water from wells and from the local streams. Some people in the village are able to buy bottles water. The water in this area is dirty and unsuitable for drinking without treatment. The nearby villages also suffer from dirty and unsafe drinking water. Nouhk is excited that he and his neighbors were able to purchase a water filter. Most families report a threefold reduction in diarrhea after they begin using the filter; this is because the filter removes bacteria and other water borne diseases. The water filter also increases disposable income and available working days due to the decreased cost of purchasing charcoal or foraging for wood and/or purchasing bottled water. The filter is guaranteed for 2 years, though most find the filter works from 3-5 years.

More information about this loan

Your loan will be used to support a group of village borrowers in purchasing TerraClear water filter sets through flexible financing. Please note that this loan will be used to provide villagers with needed goods, as opposed to cash or financial credit.

A majority of TerraClear’s customers cannot afford to pay the full upfront cost of the water filter. As a result TerraClear has created a village sales model that will allow groups of customers to pay small installments for up to 11 months.  No interest or fees are charged for the first 4 months. All villagers who require more time to repay are charged a small per visit fee on a monthly basis so that TerraClear can cover the costs of providing this service.

Please note that due to the flexible nature of this repayment plan, loan schedules will appear as a single repayment at the end of the loan term. However, TerraClear will collect repayments on and return funds to Kiva lenders on a monthly basis.

About TerraClear:

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
