Jamin is a 48-year-old married man with 5 children. He earns his income selling crops and working as a laborer at the community coffee store. He grows coffee, bananas, maize, cowpeas and beans. He also has chickens and goats.
Jamin looks forward to becoming a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). As a CKW he will use his business-in-a-box (smartphone and solar charger) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village and help them to improve their crop yield and increase their incomes.
With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Jamin will use it to expand his farming enterprises. His biggest dream in life is to educate his children to university level.
More information about this loan
This loan is part of Grameen Foundation's AppLab program and Community Knowledge Worker initiative, providing borrowers with mobile phones, solar chargers and other equipment to become knowledge centers for their smallholder farming communities.
With these tools, community knowledge workers can help their neighbors access information and advice to improve their crop yields, connect with markets and generate more income. They can also conduct mobile surveys to help local organizations better meet farmers' needs. Community knowledge workers make monthly salaries based on the number of surveys they collect, enabling them to repay Grameen for the equipment.
This Kiva loan will be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit
