Hannatu
Hannatu lives in Kwankwani and is driven by one goal: to “become the most profitable farmer in my community.” It is the desire to fulfill this ambition that led her to join Babban Gona. Now, as a member, she finally has the opportunity to access credit, good markets and input from a trained agronomist. Like all Babban Gona members, Hannatu can earn up to $2,000/ha this season from growing maize, more than three times the Nigerian farmer’s average annual income. Our typical member grows 30 bags of maize/hectare, more than double the national average of 14. However, Hannatu is ambitious and is aiming to reap at least 35 bags per hectare this season. By doing so, she will finally have enough money to make significant life changes. When asked what she plans to do with her income from this season, she said: “I plan to use the money I make to expand my farmland." With this loan, she will be able to access all the inputs and services she needs to make this dream a reality.

More information about this loan

Babban Gona Farmer Organization (Babban Gona) is a farmer services organization committed to lifting 5 million smallholder farmers out of poverty by 2030. It divides smallholder farmers into Trust Groups and delivers training and development services, inputs like seeds on credit and post-harvest marketing services. This Kiva loan will thus be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit. This system  increases farmers’ yields up to 4 times the national average. In addition, Babban Gona markets its farmers’ produce to premium markets over the course of the year, ensuring that they receive the best price possible for their produce and have a steady flow of income year round. Kiva loans are used to help Babban Gona expand its services to more rural areas in Northern Nigeria.
